Welcome to Lagos, Luz & Sagres - Eating & Drinking

Eating Out - Restaurants, Taverns, Cafes & Beach bars
Recommended restaurants in the Western Algarve: Here we feature all the eating establishments we have really enjoyed and that have remained consistently good over the years we have been visiting. We tend to favour the traditional taverns and adegas where proper Algarvian dishes are served, but we also highlight the best spots for international cuisine. Obviously, sea food is the staple here on the Atlantic coast with simple grilled fish dishes the main offering, but we also recommend the soups, pork dishes and, of course, the infamous Chicken Piri-Piri. The sweets / desserts are good too but we're usually too stuffed for anything more than a 'bica' (an Algarvian version of a double espresso). Portuguese wines are now up with the best in the world and if you're eating lunch a vinho verde is a light and refreshing accompaniment.

The restaurants listed on this page are our considered 'best of the best', but there are loads of other really excellent places and for a fuller list of restaurants and cafes please click here.

Lagos Marina | Lagos Town | Porto de Mós
Lagos Marina
  • Adega de Marina - An authentic adega style dining hall. You know it's good because the locals eat there, often in large family groups. Excellent service, fantastic food, value for money and a great atmosphere. We like especially the 'lulas' (squid) and this is our personal number 1 recommendation for the Lagos area. Can be found on the main sea front avenue (Avenida dos Descobrimentos) towards the marina end.

  • Lagos Town Centre
  • Don Sebastião - High quality restaurant and good for large groups. Superb service and wonderful food, if a bit on the pricey side - but then this is dining at its most luxurious | tel: (282) 76 27 95
  • Filho d'Mãe - Family run snack-bar and restaurant with really good fish and shellfish 'tapas'. Sitio dos Moinhos, Cerro do Convento, Lt.7 | tel: (282) 76 00 74
  • Taberna De Lagos - A proper 'taberna' (tavern) with live music and regular exhibitions. Its website shows some nice pictures. Rua Dr. Joaquim Tello Nº 1 | tel: 919 42 62 40

Praia da Luz | Burgau | Salema | Espiche | Budens
Churrasqueira O Antonio Praia da Luz
  • Bar Habana - The locals know it as 'The International' and it's a popular place to meet. It's right on the beach front and offers lovely 'all day breakfasts' (best converted with an ice cold beer we find...) and tasty snacks. This is also the home of Luz's very own web-cam, so to check on what's happening right now down at Luz beach click here.
  • Churrasqueira O Antonio - (pictured) Located half-way up Rua da Praia, grill and BBQ meat specialities. It's basic but that's reflected in the price. The locals often get a takeaway when they don't want to BBQ themselves.
  • Marujo - 'The Sailor'. Nicely varied menu | tel: (282) 78 96 67
  • O Malhão - Portuguese cuisine and a meat specialist so one of the few places where you shouldn't order fish dishes. The head waiter claims to know José Mourinho's dad, Felix, who was goalkeeper for the Portuguese national team, so football chat can be interesting. The restaurant is on the road between Luz and Burgau with loads of car-parking space.
  • Restaurante Aquario - Rapidly gaining an excellent reputation, it's a small place tucked away in the rather unprepossessing Edificio Luztur complex just up from the Church square. Your reviewer hails from Norfolk and knows a good 'stuffed crab' when he eats one - and he ate one here. Highly recommmended. Rua 1. de Maio | tel: (282) 78 91 77
  • The Dolphin - South African specialities (i.e meat and more meat) with excellent steaks, but also superb fish dishes. Rua da Calheta | tel: (282) 78 99 92

  • Espiche
  • O Fontenário - We love this immaculate and classy family-run restaurant and personally recommend the Portuguese Steak. A spacious place with an outside patio it offers scrumptious dishes, an extensive wine list and attentive service. A children's play area also helps to make this a wonderful choice when wishing to go out and celebrate something special with the family. | tel: (282) 78 99 53

  • Burgau
  • A Barraca Restaurante (The Hut) - Looks basic but the food is good, particularly for fresh, grilled fish. And it offers a lovely view high over Burgau beach and across to the cliffs | tel: (282) 69 77 48
  • Burgau Beach Bar - Always popular, with bar, restaurant, snack-bar, sunbeds and canoes for hire and a very big fridge containing all sorts of ice creams for the kids | tel: (282) 69 75 53

Sagres | Vila do Bispo | West Coast
    Marigil restaurant in Raposeira Raposeira
  • Marigil - (pictured) Superb! Exquisite Portuguese recipes and friendly attentive service. You have to reserve and choose your dish at least a day before you go but this ensures a table at the best restaurant west of Lagos. Very reasonable prices ensure that you never leave without a smile on your face and generous portions ensure you never leave without a warm glow of satisfaction in your stomach. Our favourite dishes are the rabbit stew and octopus Portuguese style | tel: (282) 63 92 74

  • Sagres
  • A Tasca - This restaurant overlooks Sagres fishing harbour and is highly recommended by us for its lobster, crab and squid kebabs. A wonderful setting to crack open a bottle of vinho verde early evening and wash down some shellfish tapas.
  • Nortada - Relaxed and friendly restaurant and beach bar on Martinhal beach with views across the bay. Recommended | tel: (282) 62 41 47
  • Vila Velha - Authentic Portuguese cuisine and good menu choice for vegetarians. Sagres | tel: (282) 62 47 88

  • Carrapateira / Bordeira
  • Restaurante Cabrita - A 'cabrita' is a kid goat but here you should go for the fish and shellfish. Located close to Bordeira beach | tel: (282) 97 31 28
